Antarctic Peninsula

The peninsula reaches 1,300 kilometres into the Southern Ocean, ice-covered and mountainous, in places under 500 metres of ice.

Some geologists think these mountains were joined to the Andes millions of years ago; an underwater ridge still runs from the peninsula’s tip towards Tierra del Fuego.
