Easter Island

Easter Island lies more than 3,000 kilometres west of South America. The extinct Terevaka volcano dominates it, with Poike and Rano Kau alongside.

Palm forest once shaded its hills, which now carry low vegetation. Scholars still argue about what caused that clearance and the fall in population.
