In the first half of 2025, about 23.2 million barrels of oil a day passed through the Strait of Malacca — 29% of the world’s maritime oil flows and the largest oil-chokepoint volume.

Malaysia’s transport ministry says more than 70,000 ships pass through the strait each year. Its shore-based Vessel Traffic System tracks traffic and warns of collision risks.
