The Mississippi has been used to define many US state lines — but the channel keeps moving, so Archer and Bell islands are still officially Arkansas despite sitting east of the river.

Where a meander is cut off it leaves an oxbow lake. Lake Chicot, at 5,300 acres, is reckoned the largest in the United States.
